Ilhan Omar pushes to change 181-year-old US Congress headwear ban

20.11.18 / As the U.S. Congress prepares for its first ever Muslim women representatives, newly elected congressmember Ilhan Omar is at the forefront of a move to overturn a 1837 House ban on head coverings to allow for religious headwear.

The change is part of a rules package introduced by top Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, that is expected to be approved in January, when Democrats take majority control of the chamber.

Omar is the first Somali-American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and, when she will be sworn in next year, she will become the first member of Congress to wear hijab.
