On this day in 2008, Brazilian Maya Gabeira rode the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman, at 20.72 m (68 ft) in Nazaré, Portugal. Two years later, she beat her own record, surfing a 22.4 m (73 ft) high wave and making it into the Guinness World Records. She has won many global championships for surfing challenging spots, and is recognised as one of the best female surfers in the world.
