On this day in 1923, feminist Huda Sha’arawi founded the Egyptian Feminist Union to advocate for reforms in the Egyptian constitution and family law, aiming to secure equal rights for women. Through her life, she led various women’s protests in the country, including the first women’s street demonstration during the Egyptian Revolution of 1919 to advocate for Egypt’s independence from Britain.
In 1925, she launched the fortnightly journal ‘L’Égyptienne’ to champion women’s rights and suffrage.
