On this day in 1884, American social reformer and women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony addressed the House Judiciary Committee and argued for an amendment to the US Constitution that would give women the right to vote. She was the co-founder of the National Woman Suffrage Association along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, an American writer and activist, and a leader of the women’s rights movement in the US. Women’s suffrage was ratified as the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920, years after her death.
