On this day in 2019, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a ban on military-style semi-automatics and assault rifles, just one week after the Christchurch terrorist attack that killed 50 people.

Calling it “the worst act of terrorism on our shores,” Ardern declared, “Our history changed forever. Now, our laws will too.” In April, Parliament passed the legislation with near-unanimous support, with only one of 120 lawmakers opposing the ban.
