Journalism training: How to write for impact

As part of our commitment to promote women’s voices, we partnered with Politics4Her to launch ‘How to write for impact’, our very first mentorship programme. Politics4Her is an intersectional feminist youth-led digital platform that advocates for the inclusive participation of young women in politics.

We both believe women play an active role in shaping the world and deserve to have their voices heard. We know that women are still underrepresented in the media (only 25% of news stories worldwide are about women), and we created this training programme to provide trainees with the tools and the encouragement to use writing to share their ideas and perspectives.

The programme covered finding your writing voice, journalistic principles such as objectivity and inclusive language, how to structure different types of articles, interviewing techniques, and editing for clarity and impact, all over the course of 12 weeks.

Why did we do this?

We know that it is increasingly hard for young people to start careers in journalism due to budget cuts, the consolidation of many media companies leading to fewer opportunities, and a high level of competition that unfortunately can result in favouring quick, sensationalist content over in-depth reporting.

We had several key goals with this project: To equip our mentees with the tools to write stories that have impact; to provide a platform for them to share their ideas and concerns; and to provide them with the confidence that writers so often need at the beginning of their careers so they know the value of their ideas and feel comfortable pitching to commissioning editors.

This is an internal mentorship programme for members of Politics4Her. To find out about training opportunities with NADJA email us at hello@nadja.co
