On this day in 1872, suffragist Victoria Woodhull became the first woman to be nominated for the United States presidency. Running as a candidate for the Equal Rights Party, Woodhull championed women’s rights, labour reforms, and the freedom to marry, divorce, and bear children without government interference. She was also one of the first female stockbrokers and in 1870 opened a brokerage firm on Wall Street.
