On this day in 2008, Dr Fehmida Mirza made history as the first woman elected Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, becoming the first to lead the country’s lower house of Parliament. A long-time member of the centre-left Pakistan People’s Party, she served as Speaker for over five years before later being appointed Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination.

Also on 19 March

In 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland marked the first-ever International Women’s Day. More than one million men and women joined rallies demanding women’s right to vote, hold public office, work, and to protest employment discrimination.
